My last few laptops have been ASUS and have been very happy with them, I used to have an Alienware before that but I hear they aren't as good since Dell bought them out. Best Buy usually has a few good deals every week in the newspaper inserts, and there is usually a decent ASUS in there for less than $300. However the problem with buying from stores is they will have a few laptops available from every major vendor, but these laptops are usually not the best ones that the vendors sell for the money. They are selling the laptops that they got a good deal on. I would go to Best Buy to test out the different brands and see if you like their keyboard layouts, etc. Decide on a brand and then go to a website like Newegg or Amazon and check out the different models for the best specs and price and make your purchase. I did desktop support for a major University for 20+ years and I believe this is the best formula for new purchases.
