The new plans go live in January. The people getting these notices are being told that they will be dropped then because their existing plan doesn't cover the minimum acceptable coverage under obamacare.
I am actually one of them. I have only had a catastrophic coverage plan for years which doesn't cover doctor visits, prescriptions or anything non-life threatening. Obamacare will only let you have these kind of plans up to a certain age. In the end, if the prices on the exchange are correct I will end up with much better coverage for about $30 more per month.
