he was most certainly real. the theory posited is based on correlations, that's not really evidence at all. the romans had big problems with uprisings and i wouldn't be surprised if they used psychological warfare as he says, but it's quite the leap to claim jesus was created as a tool of war to enslave the jewish uprisers.
