Like most people it's always seemed logical to me that ancient people existing hundreds and hundreds of years before the age of science and skepticism would have been very simple ignorant people who told and wrote and accepted the stories of the Bible as the literal truth - the writer of this book turns that upside down and says that the writers of the Holy Scriptures created the stories as symbolism and it's those that came after who were the simpletons who chose to take them literally and here we are in 2013 and we still have billions of people who still do.

I recall an episode of Star Trek (the original 60s series) where a planet adopted a book about Chicago mobs of the 1920s (accidentally left behind by another spacecraft) and patterned their entire society after it.
In retrospect, I can't help wondering if Gene Roddenberry had the bible in mind when he came up with the episode.
