It seems to be affecting the brands, So any domain that contains a 'brand' name gets ranked highly irrelevant of the extension.
Doing a few searches I have seen weird country domain extensions and other non regular domain extensions ranking very high (page #1) just because they contain the brand in the URL.
Often these sites are several years old and haven't been touched for months or years.
