This is what we get when money gets involved in the justice system.
Here is what I mean. Many jails are now run by private companies. These companies want criminals. They need them for profit. So they lobby politicians to make stricter laws and harsher sentencing. The politicians jump at it because it is a cheap, easy sell to the voters. They can come off as if they are tough on crime and when you say, "This new law will make all sex offenders register for life" the voters like what they hear.
Nobody realizes, at the time, that shit like this can happen. So the kid gets arrested, they charge him with what they think is the appropriate crime, and now we learn if he is convicted as part of the mandatory minimum sentence he gets to register as a sex offender for life. Unintended consequences all stemming from a company wanting to make money and politicians wanting easy votes. Add in school administrators who are power hungry or forget that they are dealing with kids and you have a recipe for tragedy.
