A few years back we went through the exact routine with Sammy - a 7yr old black cat I was quite attached to.
We had no warning signs that anything was wrong. We simply found her in distress in the kitchen one morning. She'd become jaundiced literally overnight. We rushed her to the vet and I figured it might be something simple they could fix with a steroid shot or something. I was absolutely floored when the vet said her kidneys had failed. He gave her a saline IV to hydrate her long enough to bring her home one last time for our daughters to say goodbye.
And then we took her back to the vet and went through the same scenario you described above. Tore me up inside. 8 years later I still see that moment in my head like a video.
