I was there for a week then we visited the north of Thailand. Was not at all what I expected. Very touristy and way too much people. Beaches were jammed packed and no chairs available. What I loved about it was when we rented a scooter and went for a rides visiting beautiful hidden places and amazing temples and ate at tiny little restaurants on the side roads. I suggest you use Phuket as a starting point to visit the closer islands.

If you are thinking of visiting the island where the movie The Beach was shot (Ko Phi Phi Leh) I suggest you do not take the tour everyone tells you too. You will be disappointed. You will be visiting it with thousands of other people and its a very small beach. Nothing magic about being dropped off on a beach where you can't even see it. Take the night tour where you eat and sleep there and wake up early to the sunrise on a deserted beach that is a good experience.

If your a bit of a voyeur you must take a nightly walk and drinks in Palong. It's pretty crazy at night and just to warn you... lots of those beautiful ladies actually have the bottom equipment too.

Besides that Thailand is beautiful. Just check out Phuket's top attractions (like the big Buddha) on sites like trip adviser and rent yourself a car or scooter (watch out the driving is crazy) and stay away from the money stealing Tuk Tuks. One ride in one of them and it's the same price as a days rental.

Oh yeah and food is fantastic. I gained at least 10 pounds!

Have fun and watch yourself ;)
