The jocks and such were busy with Pearl Jam. They knew Teen Spirit but not much else. After he died, the larger masses started listening. I remember seeing a football player in my school wear a t-shirt with his suicide note on it a few weeks later and I am pretty sure he barely knew of them previously.
The Unplugged album wasn't even out before he died.

no that is your interpretation of how popular they were.. they were very popular at the time and hailed as pioneers and yes it did improve after..
