I think it's mostly based on the fact that Zimmerman is Charleton Heston and Rick Perry's Republican shit-stain love-child.
And he loves to go around shooting people, threatening people with his gun, and claiming self-defense.
People would love to see such a smug individual be taken care of, because frankly such an individual does not contribute to a healthy society.
