It may not be illegal but it ought to be. Things are too lax with domain registration redemption policies and fees. There ought to be:
1. Minimum of 30 days after expiration where you register the name again for the regular reg fee with any register.
2. Limit on the fee during the redemption period of something like 3 times the normal reg fee.
$250 is a ridiculous price and some registrars are constantly reducing the window for normal registration after expiration. I remember when with practically everyone it was a minimum of 30 days.
There is no reason why we should only be able to renew with the current registrar. If the current registrar is giving us a hard time we should be able to use another instead. Having it otherwise opens us up to bullshit games to steal the domain.
