Tony, if you ever get in the mood for something authentically Italian-American in Chicago, stop at D'Amato Bakery and Bari Deli, next to each other at the corner of Grand and May, pretty near the Loop. In the Bakery, you can get what's called "Bakery Pizza", square slices that Italian bakers make with leftover dough on long, rectangular pans, and what some call foccaccia and Sicilians call sfingiuni, thick bread pizza with minimalist toppings, some just tomato, others with artichoke heart, black olives, anchovies, etc. Not for everybody and best eaten at room temperature. They - and the ultrafresh canolli and authentic cookes, and the just-baked Italian bread are out of this world. In Bari, you will get the world's best Italian Subs, with imported meats and cheeses, made to order, for, like $4.25, beating the pants off chains like Subway or NJ Mike's in both taste and price - and you'll rub shoulders with some very interesting, very 007 guys, who will never, ever talk to you, but leave you with a very special memory of Chicago that will linger over the years. This is the heart of what we call The First Ward. I can't figure out how Bari does it for that price, but, hey, who am I to ask questions?
