They basically operate like this:
1. find a tragedy
2. find some twist to it, something unique about it, etc
3. run it 24/7 for a week
4. find a new tragedy... rinse and repeat...

Saw them do this yesterday with a bus crash here. Bunch of old chinese people. Media kept saying "we tried to get a comment at the tour office but no one speaks english." The next channel had interviews with several people from the office who spoke perfect english.
Media loves hysteria. They can sell tampons at the break.
