I think everyone understands that there are degrees of certainty and informedness that accrue to bits of information like their provenance. How was the information gathered, how were the assumptions made, what sanity checking was used, is this a reliable first person source, how many links down the chain of provenance are we, etc.
Now that you mention it, I guess some people here actually don't understand that stuff.
Either way everyone uses "facts" as shorthand for "item of information that I happen to BELIEVE" rather than the more scientific rigorous use of the word.
Really, one can know very few things with much certainty. Not sure where you are going with this.

EXCELLENT post - you "get it" - so I will tell you where I'm going with this:
People tend to post "proof" that they consider "facts" to support their own personal experiences (and opinions) then come on GFY (and yes, elsewhere) to expouse their 'facts' in an effort to convince other people of their point of view. But the 'facts' these GFY posters use to bolster their cases? Limited or distorted 'facts' that usually end up being opinion or skewed anecdotal evidence. In other words, useless.
