I think personally I'm gonna say A, simply because you just don't know how bad of a day that person is having or what is going on in their personal life, it was a genuine mistake and he was trying to avoid a situation where if it was true, he'd probably have to cover the bill himself. Ok, yes he should be apologetic but he was most likely embarrassed, we've all been there, I know I have, make an ass of myself and instead of taking it graciously, I make it a bit worse.
