Key word here being "part of their lives".
Pretty much everyone goes through a rough time. There was a point in my life when I was 16 / 17 and was living out of my car for nearly a year, grabbing a couch and a shower from friends when I could. When I was a baby my father died, and from what I understand my mother and I were completely dependant on the government.
