It should have a much higher burden of proof for those invoking it in public places and there should be an exception for where you placed yourself in the situation or helped escalate it. In that case something like manslaughter is appropriate. (bar fights, acting like a police officer)

For instance in the Zimmerman case he should have to prove that he did not try to escalate the situation at any time in addition to having to prove that he felt his life was in danger. If it's found that he did escalate the situation then manslaughter is appropriate.
