I use some 20 bucks for a full set kind of knives, which tunred out great. Top quality knives are probably well worth it for professional cooks, but for your home, nah, as long as you keep them sharp, it won't relly make much of a difference.
Of course, when it comes to survivial, hunting knoves, etc. then it's probably worth shelling out some $$$
