The resistance is much less at $0.10 to $0.99 per month or week or year than it is at $10.00 - $40.00 a month. It's easier to justify too.
"We took off all the ads on our site and we give you 30,000 videos, 200,000 photos, and 5,000 stories all for only $0.10 a month to help us pay for our servers. One stinking dime gets you all this!"
You could do it by voluntary donations or you could flat out restrict access until it's paid or some combination thereof. I really think it could work well. But you have to offer something unique or have some sort of unique spin on it. The sites I have it in mind for aren't porn and are somewhat unique. I know people would bite if there were a convenient and safe payment method to do it.
