Have a look at
http://www.coinchoose.com/ to see how many "new" coins have been released recently. A couple of months ago there were about 10 coins listed there, and most had been in existence for almost as long as Bitcoin... the rest is change the source a bit, make an announcement, get rich quick filler...
(tip: most of the pump and dump crap coins are pointed at cryptsy)
