The biggest difference is how their religion plays such a huge part in everything they do. When I walk into a store I am not concerned about how if the owner is Jewish or Sunni or Pakistani or whatever. These things just don't factor into our lives on a daily or even a regular basis.

Irans people are more secular than people realize. Their government is the problem.
For instance many women do not want to wear the hijab but they have government paid fashion police that will accost you for not dressing conservatively enough.
Look almost everywhere in the Middle East and you see secularism growing. Of course the American right wing will never acknowledge this as it take their natural enemy away.
