Yes these was status symbol, costed a monthly salary or more, relatively more than any iphone. My first cell phone was a startac 85 in 1996, replaced in 1998 with a startac 130. It was fun that when the 130 was out (visibly smaller than the 85), whoever still had the 85 it was so much of a loser, esp. in some euro countries:
When I purchased an yet smaller model (not to look like a loser), I gave those motorola's to my parents who used until battery and/or lcd display deceased.
The most exotic phone I ever had it was the motorola accomply 008, around 2002:
It had b/w touch screen needing a pen like the Palm (anyone remember Palm?). I gave it to my mom, who learned using the pen and played card games on it.
My mom currently got my old iphone 3G. Updated to ios 4.0, most of the apps in appstore will not install, giving a "you need newer OS" type of messages (and I mean normal apps like translators, not 3d games), but she does not care.
I am sure my mom will get my Samsung android phone in a near future. I am the only one who gift old cell phones, pc's and stuff to parents?
