Per Diem Taxes
Per diem allowance payments are not taxable to the employee as income tax or the employer as any type of business tax unless that per diem amount is in excess of the federal per diem rates.
Per diem allowance typically cover the costs of travel, meals and incidental expenses. An example of an incidental expense is if the employee had to purchase a new toothbrush and toothpaste.
