Yes, it would be great if this was the 1960's when you could walk your relatives right up to the gate, but those days are over, and you delaying people from getting to their flight makes you look like a rotten spoiled kid

Honestly, I would have been shocked at the search, had the agent not explained everything she was going to do before hand. It sucks that this is what it has come to, but honestly, I remember getting patted down similar to that when going to see bands in clubs years ago.
