I read that dogs only think in the moment, so they can't really contemplate things like "why is my leg missing?" or "why are my nuts gone."
A dog doesn't even know he ever had nuts in the first place. They get a lot of credit for being smart -- and supposedly an intelligent dog can be as smart as a human 2 year old -- but I don't think they're self aware. Part of what makes them so lovable.
