From experience a good site should get visitors naturally just from doing "site:domain.com keyword" or "<site name> keyword". If that's not happening then maybe your site isn't offering enough and you should look at that. Do what you can to make the visitors you get "sticky" (stay on the site and come back). Believe it or not but that should translate into better rankings naturally albeit the slow and steady way. If you want to speed it along you can try to use social networking sites but be careful not to overdo it and you should know what you are doing so it's not obvious spam.
