Both of those are on the USB chain, fairly non distructive area under XP...

I've seen the chain bomb out, but never cause a system fault.
AMD and one motherboard manufacture had a severe issue with the USB line but that was resolved with a bios update.

Sure there are a few things you can do..
Check the system error logs - Admin Tools - Event Viewer
Look for anything with a warning or a stop to give you clues.

You can also go to control pannel - system - startup and recovery and poke around there to get where it dumps the logfile.
