My parents were mean as hell. lol
My mom was a deputy sheriff and my dad was a rancher and citrus grower redneck.
Those were the days when you were a kid and did something wrong you got backhanded. So I learned to be able to confront my parents and have some pretty high tension discussions with them WITHOUT getting hit. It taught me how to do that.
Kids these days (as you said) are so coddled at home by their parents that they have no social skills or understanding of the real world.
That's why I am amazed at how some of the people on GFY talk to others on this board. I know I wouldn't do that unless I expected to get punched in the face.
And I can thank good old mom and dad for teaching me how to argue a point without any physical pain coming to me. lol

just because its what they did 'back then' and you turned out alright doesn't mean it was right of them to backhand you. did you do the same to your children? i'm guessing not.
i think there is a lack of great artists and musicians these days firstly because things are set up differently than they were back in the day. if john lennon was around today, the industry wouldn't sign him in a million years but regardless i think people tend to value a comfortable life over gaining real experiences. you used to go through a lot of shit to find yourself, riding the rails, going from town to town, job to job until you find your niche, now people just want whatever will get them the ipad, smartphone and being able to update twitter 100 times a day.
