Maybe when I was 10 years old. Not in high school.

I definitely "talked back" and so did lots of other kids in my school. I went to highschool in Bartow, Fla. graduated in 1979.

And as I said I ran an underground student newspaper that had comedic derogatory "news stories" about the teachers and faculty.

I was also a straight A student and drove my teachers nuts half the time and the other half they loved me.

And yeah, I got in "trouble" a few times. But never got suspended or a paddling. Most times it was for smoking cigarettes on school campus (because that was the cool thing to do back then).

But I had screaming matches with my science professor in high school (Doctor Peterson...I still remember his name all these decades later lol). I enjoyed needling him...and he had a bad temper and we were like fire and gasoline coming together.

But it wasn't like that everyday of course. I actually learned a lot in his course and always had a 4.0 grade point average.

Teachers have to be in control of their classroom for sure, but their primary job is to encourage kids to use their minds and THINK. It's a tricky thing to pull off without it going to hell...but as I said, not only did my parents not tell me what to wear when I was 16 and 17 years old...neither did the school.

Funny enough, my oldest daughter (now 21 years old) finished high school here in Vegas. During her senior year she was 18 years old. A legal ADULT. And one day she was feeling ill at school and went to check out and come home.
The school wouldn't let her leave without her parents "permission".

They called me. I laughed at them and asked them what the hell they thought they were doing! I told them my daughter was an adult woman and I couldn't give her "permission" for anything and they needed to stop acting like fools!

They apologized and my daughter got in her car and came home.
Just one example of overreaching.
