I had that type of surgery 18 months ago but for a severely pinched nerve in my left elbow. Symptoms: Numbness in the fingers and the hand muscles were starting to deteriorate. The Surgeon said I had some minor Carpal Tunnel but I declined surgery for it.

I bought some arm rest beanbag tubes made for in front of the keyboard like these: http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-Wri...rest+mouse+pad and set them on the desk resting my lower arms on them. The hand cramps stopped ... Try this before you commit to surgery for Carpal Tunnel.
