1980 June 3: Bombing of the Statue of Liberty. At 7:30 pm, a time delayed explosive device detonated in the Statue of Liberty's Story Room. FBI investigators believed the perpetrators were Croatian terrorists seeking independence for Croatia from Yugoslavia, (possibly members of the Usta?e) though no arrests were made.
Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s Croatian terrorists carried out a series attacks throughout Yugoslavia, the United States, and Western Europe. The terrorist attacks, which were aimed at obtaining Croatia?s secession from Yugoslavia, killed a number of American, European, and Yugoslav civilians.
All told, Croats committed more than 20 acts of terror in the U.S. from 1976 through 1980.
