americans are not unique from others, we too have limits, the expression "hits close to home" goes directly to that. the phrase comes from the fact that the more direct of an impact something has to someone, the more importance they attach to it. that's human nature, that's a limit of the human condition.

it's not accurate or fair to expect any human being to feel something beyond their limits.
