My luck has not been that great. Back in the day I bought some gallery traffic from Choker that did pretty well and for about a year I big on some search terms on a SE called 123 search. Those were golden. There were a few keywords that I could easily triple my money on just sending traffic directly to a sponsor tour. It came to an end when the sponsor figured out what I was doing and bid on on the top spots. They could afford to spend more per click than me so I had to give it up.
Buying other traffic, though, I have never had any luck. That said, I am about to launch a new blog in a sub niche and will try some traffic buys for it so hopefully it will pan out.
