I myself recently started as a voulenteer fireman, not for the money or anything, but to get out and away from the computer. So far it's been awesome, but I have to go to a school for two weeks lol. That'll be fun.
Anyhow, what kind of design?

Just basic concepts to provide them with some tools to be productive or have a profession, really not very in-depth. I'm currently helping at college with "Design Theory" but that is really complex for the level I expect these kids to have. I'm creating the contents right now, but guess I'll start with "how to open Photoshop and Illustrator"

and some basic theory , like color psychology, shapes, composition and such.
Quite honestly, I have no clue what I will do and I'll probably develop the contents as soon as I know these kids. Either way, I have some pretty long experience teaching poor kids, just not with criminal records. As we're at it, these kids aren't really criminals, mostly minor charges and felonies, as well as kids taken out from the street for their own protection, ie kids without parents or with parents who made them work. Only males, not girls.
For what I know, the real challenge is to make them interested in the subject and make the classes fun and something they want to really do (it's no obligation for them)
