The band was Alabama Shakes. They are a weird looking group but sounded fucking great. Never heard of them before.
The Best SNL was a couple of months ago with Mick Jagger. He sand with 4 different bands including the Foo Fighters and a Montreal band. the show was really funny and had lots of surprise guests too.
SNL is "ok" most of the time, pretty funny sometimes, and hilarious on the rare occasion. They just need to tighten up the jokes, drop a player or two, take chances with jokes that are more edgy.

I did not watch this weeks as most of the other weeks I have watched recently are pretty much described as you described this one. I have heard the Alabama Shakes did rock it, which is why I originally asked about the music in my first reply. I completely agree with your final overview of what SNL is. The last funny thing I can remember that really had me laughing on SNL is when Fred Armison or however its spelled played the blind governor of NY then the real guy came out and they way the fuck with New Jersey. It was hilarious. That guy hasnt been in office for a while already.
