Bikes should use the sidewalk. We have bike lanes here, and at least once or twice a week I am stopping short because a biker is in my way when I am trying to make a left hand turn.
In fact, we had a huge accident here a few months ago because of this. First thing in the morning everyone is driving off to work, and everyone wanted to make a left into the turn lane to get the freeway - which required them to cross the bike lane. Biker was oblivious to this fact and decided he had the right of way (he might have been right really). He ended up breaking both of his legs and three cars hit each other.
I ride a bike myself, stay on the sidewalks, use the crosswalk, and go to one of the trails nearby.
