People are empowered by firearms. It's easy, painless, doesn't involve getting their hands wet, and guarantees quick success.
If you attack someone with a hammer you might not kill them and will be covered with blood, and a struggle might take place. That's not the case with a firearm - you can do it from twenty feet away, not get "wet", not worry about a struggle, and not worry about loosing the fight.
