Because Monsanto said so in their
Marketing material?
GMOs do not increase yield, in fact according to International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge in their Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) report
http://www.agassessment.org/ (authored by over 400 scientists and backed by 58 governments), GM crop yields are "highly variable" and in some cases "yields declined".
The report also noted "?Assessment of the technology lags behind its development, information is anecdotal and contradictory, and uncertainty about possible benefits and damage is unavoidable.?
They concluded that the current GMOs have nothing to offer the goals of reducing poverty and hunger, improving nutrition, health and rural livelihoods. It's quite the opposite, GMOs divert money and resources that would otherwise have been spent on technologies which are safer and more reliable.
