Because the gun industry and their lobbyist the NRA using it to scare people into buying more guns. It's fear mongering at it's best something the NRA is great at which happens to be good for their main concern, the gun manufacturing industry.

It's not about rights, it's about profits.

Not to mention pre-ban guns from before 1997 are still very,very common. It's not like they get thrown out in the trash or wear out beyond use.
