spazlabz it's not a toy by far, lot of the accidents you hear of are because of drunkeness, or plain stupidity. Some people do it in the garage, or other semi enclosed area. It's asking for trouble.
I have done this numerous times now, always outside, well ventilated area. Yes, its close to a building, which is my bike shed, but the reason for that is, if it starts raining, there is an awning over the door, that I can use to shield the pot from raindrops. Hot oil and water dont mix well.
You also need to keep an eye on the temp of the oil(375) and the height of the flame from the burner. If it starts to get too hot, turn the flame down, otherwise the bird will get too crispy, burnt on the outside, but the inside will not be cooked. It needs to be cooked at an even temp so many minutes per lb.
In the final analysis, use common sense
