Depending on the police and the other local in the accident, they sometimes conspire to milk you. Suddenly a minor accident becomes very painful for the Thai and their scooter that has nothing more than a hairline scratch needs to be totally replaced. Of course not all of them are cock sucking bastards like this, and if you know how to stand your ground, you often don't have to pay anything other than the real damages you may have caused.
If I do wrong, I'll take care of it 100%. But I won't let them hose me if I didn't do wrong. I stand my ground with them and speak enough Thai to let them know they are not going to get anywhere with me and I have all night to waste and nothing else to do. It's also not legally a matter for the police to decide what payment is, so be sure to remind them of that as well. They just try to bluff you into cashing them out, and the Thai who got into the accident will then share their money with the police. It's a scam and most people allow it to happen.
