I haven't read the link, but I think you would be better off helping a family that you know who is going through some rough times. Maybe they have little kids that will not see much of a Christmas. Play Secret Santa or leave a box of food on their doorstep. Things like this are very meaningful to the receivers as they are a complete surprise, it will do a real and immediate good.
