Craziness. Money isn't growing on trees like a couple of years ago. If my own stuff wasn't paying me what clients are willing to pay (which is usually the case), I'd rather work on client projects.
I used to work 2-3 hours per day and forgo the extra money, but now I am even picking up pennies on the sidewalk.
You just never know when things will dry up -- and it's the first time I've felt like that in decades of stable employment at very decent wages. I even sold my Viper, Porsche, BMW, boats, all kinds of toys, a year or two ago to stock up, hunker down, and work my ass off. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I just feel like "winter is coming," to borrow a phrase.
