He said that it usually happened when they got "clean". They would do it for a long time and build up a tolerance to it. Then they would get "clean" and kick it.

But inevitably they would have a backsliding moment when they would decide to do it "one more time" for fun.

Then they would take the same dosage they did before.

Only now their bodies no longer had the tolerance for it and they overdosed.

He said he was always real careful to never do that during the numerous times he cleaned up over the years. But friends of his like Gram Parsons weren't so careful and died.
