My mind just automatically just shuts down any contender the party has come up with in recent years. They can't cast their collective lot that far right, and expect that moderates or those with left leanings in some areas are going to toe the party line.
That's been proven two terms in a row, and likely would have been a term before it, had the Dems had someone more likeable than Gore running.
