It's quite simple. Employees do walk to their department and stay there for their shifts. I and the other managers are all over the place. The shop is 12 acres under roof. Walking from the offices to the shipping department takes at least 5 minutes. Do the math, it's quite simple. Managers are the highest overhead of any business. Having them and myself waste time walking this place is not cost effective.

Does anyone recall what tech company it was where the CEO had a PA installed in the building and each day would single out one employee to personally insult as "motivation"?
The guy was famous in the early 90's for bilking VCs...
