The two party system actually works fine.
It's the fact that politics has been turned into a multi-billion dollar spectator sport, filled with entertainers that stoke hate and partisanship to increase ratings, blog page views, and book sales. The Republicans started this, but now the Democrats are doing it as well.
When everyone sees the world in binary terms, my team versus your team, the politicians pander to that. Politicians pander to whatever the people want. In this case it's never giving in to the other side.
The politicians are not to blame, it's the people. If everyone stopped with this home team mentality regarding politics, all this gridlock would stop.
Everything wrong with government right now is because people let themselves get sucked into this partisanship money making machine. The money in politics isn't the problem, it's the money in Fox News, The Drudge Report, Ann Coulter's books, etc.
Like I said, the Democrats are doing it too, but the Republicans started it by exploiting a lot of new political observers who are not savvy enough to realize the big picture.
Haven't you noticed now that every wack-job is a political expert who is totally immersed in political media? Don't you think it's weird that your drunk neighbor now suddenly knows all the right wing talking points within hours?
