Everything in the core of the show is relevant to the time period in which it takes place. As for the little bits that happen "today," there's nothing that's "out there" that you wouldn't see in any other horror show/movie today.
On a side note, how fucking hilarious was it when Adam Levine knee-ed his wife in the head when she was giving him a blowjob and his arm was getting ripped off? I was seriously like, "Damn! he just knee-ed her in the fucking head!"
