They probably are. I used to sell computers a long time ago and manufacturers like Seagate honoured their warranties without problems. If a customer brought a machine in with a bad HD we swapped it for a new one, sent the old one back to the distributor, and received a new one soon afterwards.

If it doesn't have the Apple logo, its probably not an Apple product. It's probably a clone, and you probably got hosed.
