Did you think that in an election where the challenger wins, they suddenly on day one show him hundreds of reports about everything he needs to know after not showing him anything for months? If they did that, the challenger would be paralyzed by a lack of information for the first six months of his Presidency every four years. Serious candidates get secret service protection and intelligence briefings in advance of the election. It allows them to not look like ignorant asshats in the debates, and it allows them to transition into leadership if they actually win the election.
That makes them representative of our nation, especially when they meet with foreign leaders (who would never take a meeting with them unless they were already being sanctioned by our nation). Countries don't meet with Romney because they like him or dislike him, they meet with him because he is a Candidate for President. They (and we) expect him to act like one as well.
